The Power of Feeling & the Sub-Consciousness Mind

Monet, Rue Saint Denis

When a desire becomes a steady thought, its success is assured. – Inayat Khan

Sufi Amin always used to say to me: "if you cannot master your everyday life, how are you ever going to reach Self-Realization."  Thus, as students on the path of awakening, our first and last lesson was to develop self-mastery.
In I found an book written by Neville Goddard, and was amazed how deeply he was able to articulate a fundamental principle of self-mastery regarding the use of feeling and the power of the sub-consciousness.
I would like to share a few key principles from his book and suggest an action we can take to implement his principles.

Principle 1: “The conscious impresses the subconscious while the subconscious expresses all that is impressed upon it. The subconscious does not originate ideas but accepts as true those which the conscious mind feels to be true, and in a way known only to itself objectifies the accepted ideas. Therefore, through our power to imagine and feel, and our freedom to choose the idea we will entertain, we have control over creation.”

Action 1: To overcome present circumstances and achieve your goals for your future, write on a 3x5 card a positive affirmation of what you want to become.  Always choose something that positively moves you toward your desired goal, rather than something that tries to avoid a present condition.  For example, choose “I will develop complete and total self-confidence and I will never stop until I have attained it”; rather than, “I will not be insecure."

Principle 2: “Feeling is the one and only medium through which ideas are conveyed to the subconscious. Therefore, the person who does not control their feeling may easily impress the subconscious with undesirable states.”

Action 2: Use visualization, clearly imagine and picture what you want to happen. As you visualize, feel that this will occur as you see it in your mind’s eye. The sub-consciousness mind communicates by feeling and images.  Visualization is feeling translated into image.

Principle 3: “Every feeling makes a subconscious impression, and unless it is counteracted by a more powerful feeling of an opposite nature it must be expressed.  The dominant of two feelings is the one expressed.”

Action 3: Never doubt or second guess your that your affirmation or visualization will work!  Be patient. If a negative thought comes that tries to undermine your confidence or faith in your affirmation or visualization, do not accept it - you can counter it by the feeling of “knowing without doubt” that your affirmation or visualization will manifest.

Extra Credit...
Action 4: In life watch for the opportunities that will arise regarding your goal and act on them.

What you want to manifest will probably not fall in your lap all at once. Most of the time you can enhance your chances of getting what you visualize by taking some kind of action to help it manifest.

Here is an example: You need to move to a new home so you visualize, in detail, the kind of home you want (its looks, features, location, cost, etc.), and you also see yourself finding that home, walking through each room, even signing the lease!  Now, if you actually DO start looking for a new home, reading the adds on the paper, mentioning to others that you are looking, etc., what you have visualized will have an easier time coming to you.

A Jewel from the heart of Murshida Mary Inayat

This is a transcript of an affirmation practice and short but powerful teaching given by Murshida Mary during a time of need.  Use this daily to nourish and sustain you.

"I affirm the reality of health, peace and love within me because God dwells there; Great Creator, may the Holy Spirit rest in my heart and grant me peace forevermore."

Accepting the will of God means contented acceptance, not just resigning ourselves to personal disappointments.

Jesus said: “What things so ever you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them and you shall have them.” (Mark 11:24)

I now make a picture in my mind of myself already in possession of what I ask for and that begins the process by which it becomes mine.

Be not afraid, for faith in God’s Presence in your life will guide and protect you, as you are much loved by him.  It is my sincere desire that these words will take root in your hearts and will loosen the threads of anxiety within you, Freeing you to soar to your highest potential and bring you peace of mind.

There is no reality but God.

A Hiddin Treasure

One of the fortunate few, you have found your way to the door of the Dervish; you knock on the door and ask for the treasure box of life and it is freely given.
But the dervish tells you it is hidden, only you don't hear her, you don't think it is hidden because you are dazzled by the allure of the box itself.
Happily, you display your beautiful treasure box in prominent places for all to see.  People notice and ask you about it and you proudly talk about how you obtained it.
In time, because you don't feel much different from when the dervish gave you the treasure box, it begins to dawn on you that there must be more, that the box itself is not the treasure.
You pine and lament, wishing for more treasure. You become full of desire for more of life's hidden treasure. Your desire creates a longing, and that longing draws you closer, until you see signs of the hidden treasure.  For awhile you think the signs are the treasure and become satisfied, but the hypnosis of your longing, and mistaking them for the treasure become another veil.
Now desperate, you recall the what she told you about how to dissolve the veils, but you just can't believe that something so simple, so ordinary could work, so you make a thousand excuses not to do what must be done.

But every once in awhile you do what the dervish said, and every time it works revealing some of the real treasure of life which.

What did the dervish tell you to do?  To Remember and Surrender!

Buddha said: There is a place you can’t find by going anywhere.

Hazrat Inayat Khan Said:
Whose hand may lift thy veil beloved? Only the hand of the lover.
And what is revealed? Thy true self.
By what action can such a veil lifted? No action but surrender.
When once this revelation occurs, what mystery then is left of love? The mystery of Union.

How do you remember and surrender? By spiritual practice.

What is spiritual practice? If you don't know, ask the Dervish, listen carefully and then do what you are told.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep.
The Dervish goes back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don't go back to sleep.

Oh Light Bearer

Remember oh lover of light... When skies grow dark, every light shines brighter! YOU are a light in the darkness, shining like the Moon.
